Dr. Michael van Manen

Dr. Michael van Manen is a neonataologist at the Stollery Children's Hospital and an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta where he is also the Director and Endowed Chair of Health Ethics for the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre. He completed his medical and doctoral studies at the University of Alberta and the University of British Columbia. His research program centers on relational ethics, situated within the tradition of phenomenology. He is an international expert in qualitative health research. Past research projects have related to ethical decision-making, organ donation, and the use of medical technologies. Current projects are focused on the experiential life of the fetus/newborn, the use of medical technologies in clinical encounters, and parental experiences in critical care.
