Education

Dr. Muhieldin is an internationally (US, Canada, Europe) trained pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon with special expertise in complex neonatal surgery, cardiac assist device implantation and cardiac transplantation. He also has completed Leadership and Quality/Safety and Informatics training at Harvard Medical School.

Biography

Dr. Muhieldin is a congenital and pediatric cardiac surgeon with extensive advanced training in pediatric heart surgery, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. His postgraduate training spans leading centers across Canada, the United States, and Europe, including McGill University, Western University, the University of Toronto, the University of Alberta, Harvard Medical School, the Mayo Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic, and Zurich University Hospital. In addition to his surgical expertise, he brings leadership experience in quality improvement and a strong commitment to clinical excellence.

Dr. Muhieldin joined the Stollery Children’s Hospital in 2019 as a congenital and pediatric heart surgeon, where he also directed the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation program and simulation-based training. Since moving to BC Children’s Hospital in 2023, he has fostered a team-based, patient-centered approach to cardiovascular care that has elevated outcomes and strengthened the culture across cardiac sciences. As Division Head, he is responsible for advancing provincial capacity for children’s heart surgery, deepening interprovincial collaboration through the Western Canadian Children’s Heart Network, and working with care partners to renew the Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support programs.
